Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions we’re asked most about water cremation, our services, and our products.
What is water cremation?
Water Cremation (also called Alkaline Hydrolysis or Aquamation) is an eco-friendly alternative to flame cremation. It uses a water-based process with a solution of 95% water and 5% alkali to gently break down the body, returning it to its natural elements. It is the same process that occurs as part of nature’s course when a body is laid to rest in the soil.
How does the water cremation process work?
Your pet is placed in an individual, sealed compartment. A warm water + alkali solution (about 95°C) circulates to reduce all but the bones to liquid. The bones are then carefully prepared into a fine powder (ashes) to be returned to you.
What are the environmental benefits?
Water cremation uses over 90% less energy than flame cremation and has roughly 1/20th the carbon footprint, with no direct emissions of harmful gases or mercury.
Is the water and by-product safe for the environment?
Yes. The resulting liquid is primarily water and minerals. It is completely safe, non-toxic, and naturally rich in nutrients that help nourish plants and grass, supporting healthy new growth.
How long does water cremation take?
The process typically takes 10–12 hours depending on the size of your pet, and we aim to return ashes within 3–5 working days, keeping you updated along the way.
Are the remains safe to handle and are they different to flame cremation ashes?
Yes—remains are pathogen-free. Compared to flame cremation, water cremation ashes are typically a lighter colour and a more consistent, fine powder.
